When it comes to summer destinations I am usually found in Southampton, NY enjoying Flying Point beach, one of the many villages for shopping and food, or just relaxing at the ‘Raynor Resort’ enjoying time with family. Not too long ago Robert and I discovered the other favorite summer destination, the Berkshires. Here you can enjoy many of the same amenities as Southampton like cute villages with great restaurants and shops, but here you can also experience the beautiful mountain scenes and activities like hiking and zip lining, and although my in-laws are not located here, it gives them a reason to visit us!
Tanglewood is our favorite spot in the Berkshires. A stunning outdoor music arena located in Lenox, MA with views of the dreamy surrounding of the Berkshire Hills. It is often referred to as the “summer home” for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and is where you can find world-renowned artist like James Taylor & Yo Yo Ma playing. For music lovers, there’s no more enchanting venue than Tanglewood in the summertime. After visiting a handful of time in the past two years, Robert and I decided it was time to purchase season passes, and we are very much looking forward to a summer filled with yummy picnics, beautiful music and evenings under the stars. I love spending time at the beach in the summer, but their is something about the quiet mountains and manicured lawns at Tanglewood that are just absolutely relaxing and enticing.
Along with the wonderful music, Tanglewood is well known for its picnics. Beginning a few hours before each show, ticket holders will stake their claim to a spot using blankets, lawn chairs, tables and even candelabras! Picnicking at Tanglewood is nothing like you’ve seen before, from candelabras flickering in the night to custom cocktails and tasty sandwiches, the picnic scene at a concert in Tanglewood is something special. Music fans from all over travel to picnic during concerts. The “Shed” music hall is designed with open sides to allow the patrons sitting in the “cheap seats” on the lawn to hear the music pouring out. While screens hang on the outside of the building showing off the performance, and sometimes even movies, to those sitting on the lawn. This is an especially wonderful scene when John Williams & the Boston Symphony Orchestra are playing along with movies that John composed, movies like ET, Star Wars, Jurassic Park or Jaws all along while they are showing on the screen. At this particular show, we were able to see the performance and English subtitles on the screens to Wagner’s Das Rheingold, which is sung in German. It’s like a drive-in movie with candles and great food!
While some summer days I would rather be laying on the beach in Southampton enjoying yummy seafood and delicious drinks, other summer days I prefer the tranquil feeling of the quiet Berkshire mountains and Tanglewood picnics. You truly cannot go wrong, now its just choosing the beach or the mountains!
