On the first day of summer, I thought I would talk about America’s pastime – baseball (and fashion of course!) Can you really look stylish at a sporting event? I say yes! Let’s chat about what to wear for maximum practicality while mastering a low-maintenance look that’s also comfortable.
My husband and I were recently gifted two amazing New York Mets tickets from my brother in-law Matthew. 12th row right behind home plate! I had never been to Citi Field before, so I knew I had to make the most of this adventure. We made sure to take the train in to experience that New York City kind of lifestyle. I got myself my first Mets cap, and went onto the field! Getting the cap is easy but experiencing batting practice from the field is rare, thanks to a buddy of ours, we got to add that incredible experience – thanks Coach! Although we had to tough it out through the final innings in the rain, the Mets finished strong with a walk off win that made my first Citi Field experience one to remember!
Now let’s get back to the fashion of it all! While I was choosing my game day attire, I had a few things I wanted to keep in mind. I wanted to support my team, feel comfortable, and stylish all at the same time. However, I wanted to be extra cautious not to be too overdone and look like Joe Namath on the New York Jets sidelines. Sometimes too much …. is too much!
It isn’t very easy to get that put-together look while dressing for the elements, so here are my go to game day fashion tips.
My best advice is to keep it casual and comfortable, this way you can go from tailgating before the game to grabbing a drink at the bars after and know that your style will fit in anywhere. It’s definitely essential to have something that is supporting your team (Go Mets!). Go for a cap or team tee, they are simple and every sport has both items for sale. Plus they pair well with your favorite jeans. I like to stick with the classic styles and team colors when it comes to these pieces because “A classic never goes out of style.” My biggest money saving tip for team clothing, especially if you are a petite person like myself, is to go for the kid’s sizes. Kid’s sizes are cheaper than the adult sizes, which is always a win in my book!
You are most likely going to be walking, whether it’s from tailgating before the game to running around trying to find that hotdog you’ve been waiting for. Don’t be that girl who is trying to balance the bleachers in heels or wedges. Have a shoe you know you can walk in, or even stand in for a while. I love to wear a good slip on sneaker, they are comfortable, stylish and great for maneuvering the bleachers. A small crossover bag is also a great choice when considering your accessories, they are lightweight and you won’t have to carry them, just throw it over your shoulder! Stadiums are really cutting down on what kinds of bags they will allow, so you don’t need to bring along a ton of makeup or accessories. You just need the essentials like lipstick, beer money and your ID. I also wouldn’t bring along your favorite bag into the stands, beer often gets knocked on the floor (even at $10 a pint!). It’s going to get dirty, and it’s going to get wet. So I’d choose a small simple bag and you’ll be good to go.
